Tim Kennedy Reportedly Wounded in a Congo Ambush Last Month

Reports say former UFC fighter Tim Kennedy was shot last month in the Democratic Republic of the Congo while working a private security contract, and he has not confirmed any of it.

Accounts circulating since this week put the hit around September 17 and describe an ambush on a three-man element.

Those same accounts say Kennedy took multiple gunshot wounds, mostly to a leg, that a tourniquet stayed on for more than five hours, and that the evacuation ran about eight hours before he was medevaced back to the United States, with one leg at risk.

Kennedy, a former Army Green Beret, has not posted about the incident. No hospital, no official U.S. statement, and no photograph have been produced to establish the wounds.

Brent Tucker is one of the people putting a name and a date on it. “These are the facts. He was shot in the Congo in Africa. He was doing contracting work. He was shot on 17 September.

He was in a three-man element. There will be more information but as of right now, we will call it an ambush,” Tucker said, as reported by El-Balad.

Tucker also said he believed Kennedy was shot four times and that a New Zealand SAS member was with the element. Robert Young Pelton separately said Kennedy was seriously injured in the September 17 incident and was medically evacuated to the United States through Bujumbura and Johannesburg.

The death those accounts attach to the same fight is documented on its own. Former New Zealand SAS soldier Justin Conaglen was killed, his body was returned to New Zealand, and he was buried in Northland.

The New Zealand Defence Force said it is supporting the family and has no further comment, and New Zealand has an investigation open.

What is not established is that Conaglen died in the same gunfight as Kennedy. Available reporting does not independently place the two men in one incident, and the Kennedy half of the story still rests on people passing it along.

The contract is just as unsettled. Some accounts link the work to a U.S. private military company associated with Erik Prince, whose firms have been reported active in the DRC. Others claim the element clashed with Russia’s Africa Corps, the rebranded Wagner presence in the region.

Neither claim has been confirmed, and the Africa Corps version is hard to square with reporting that Russian contractors have generally been on the same side as the Congolese government.

Kennedy’s fighting record is the part that does not depend on the rumor. He went 18-6 between Strikeforce and the UFC, with a run that included wins over Roger Gracie and a title-fight loss to Luke Rockhold, and he has been out of the cage for years.

Until he or a medical authority speaks, the September 17 account stays a report, not a confirmed result. The next development is either a statement from Kennedy or a finding that separates his name from Conaglen’s death.
