Claressa Shields Wants Chantelle Cameron Next and Eyes Ford Field
Claressa Shields wants the biggest available name next, and she is willing to take that fight into a football stadium.
The undefeated Flint champion said she would “love to have that fight” with Chantelle Cameron after talks with Most Valuable Promotions picked up following Cameron’s win over Mikaela Mayer. The comments came in a Salita Promotions and Wynn Records interview from San Juan that All The Smoke Fight circulated this week.
“I think that Chantel Cameron is the best opponent,” Shields said. “She’s ranked number two on the pound-to-pound list. Your girl is number one, of course.”
She framed the matchup as a rare one-versus-two fight. “So this will be the first time, since I’ve been boxing, where I’ve seen one versus two on the pound-to-pound list.”
That is the news angle. Nothing is signed. Both sides have confirmed the conversations are real.
Shields is 19-0 with four knockouts after stopping Kaye Scott in the sixth round on Aug. 15 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. The win put the WBC and WBA middleweight titles back on a fighter who already holds undisputed heavyweight championship status.
Cameron is coming the other direction. She beat Mayer by unanimous decision on Aug. 29 in Birmingham, adding the WBA and WBC super welterweight belts to the WBO title she already owned. The Englishwoman is 23-1 and has not lost since her 2023 rematch with Katie Taylor.
Shields used that result as her argument for skipping a Mayer fight. “And, hey, I’ll qualify against Mikayla Mayer next, but she lost to Chantel,” she said. “So, winner stays on.”
Cameron has already said the same thing from her side. After Birmingham, she told The Ring that MVP had gone straight to Shields’ team and that the talks were “moving quite quickly.”
The weight is the remaining piece. Shields will not come below 160 pounds. Cameron has said she would accept middleweight rather than force Shields down, even if that means giving away size on fight night.
Venue talk is moving just as fast as the opponent talk. The interviewer floated Madison Square Garden because of New York. Shields did not shut it down.
“It’s a few different options for this fight, if we can get it made,” she said. Then she named the building that has her camp’s attention. “They want me to fight in Detroit at the Ford Field Center.”
She caught herself on the scale of that idea. “Oh, wow, that’s a stadium. At the football stadium.”
Ford Field is the home of the Detroit Lions. Four of Shields’ last six fights were already downtown at Little Caesars Arena. A stadium date would be a different kind of homecoming for the two-time Olympic gold medalist from Flint.
She also listed New York and a return to Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. “But I’m thinking that Detroit Ford Field, the football stadium, maybe is runner up right now.”
That lines up with what her promoter has already put on the record. Dmitriy Salita told The Detroit News earlier this month that Ford Field talks were “great” and that a Saturday in early February 2027, the week before the Super Bowl, was the target window.
Salita has not named a locked opponent. Cameron, Lauren Price, and Cris Cyborg have all been in the conversation. Shields just made her preference public again.
The business side is why the stadium talk is not empty noise. Shields signed a multi-fight deal with Salita and Wynn Records last year that was reported as the richest promotional contract in women’s boxing. She has gone from small rooms to nearly 18,000 at Little Caesars Arena.
A No. 1 versus No. 2 fight in a stadium is the next step her team has been selling. Cameron is the opponent who gives that card an actual pound-for-pound argument instead of another tune-up at 160.
There is still no contract, no network, and no confirmed date. Shields was careful on that point. “We’ve been having some great talks with MVP, and it’s been going good,” she said. “Hopefully, we can get the fight done, and that’ll be my next fight.”
That is where the story sits this week. The two best available names want the fight. One wants 160. One is willing to come up. Detroit wants the stadium. New York and Atlanta are still on the board.
If the deal closes, women’s boxing gets the kind of one-versus-two main event the sport rarely books. If it stalls, Shields still has other names and a building in her own state waiting on an answer.
