Aljamain Sterling Calls Jean Silva Title Talk Absurd and Delusional

Aljamain Sterling did not treat Jean Silva like the next man in line at 145 pounds. He called that idea absurd.

Speaking on The AH Show, the former UFC bantamweight champion said the division is being built around exciting fights, not a clean ladder. Then he went after Silva’s claim that a short-notice win should put him in the title conversation.

“I personally don’t think rankings matter as much anymore,” Sterling said. “It seems like the direction is obvious that it’s who has the better performance.”

That is the frame he used for everything that followed. Sterling is booked against Kevin Vallejos at UFC Qatar on November 21. Silva just headlined Noche UFC and finished Jose Miguel Delgado after Yair Rodriguez pulled out. Those two results now sit next to each other in the same featherweight argument.

Sterling did not see a title case in Silva’s last fight.

“I mean, Jean Silva beat a guy named Jose Delgado short notice, and he dropped him and hurt him pretty bad,” Sterling said. “And if he thinks he deserves a title shot over that performance, that’s just absurd and delusional.”

Delgado stepped in on short notice in Glendale on September 12. Silva dropped him in the third round and finished the fight with a one-arm rear-naked choke at 2:57. The win moved Silva to 18-3 and kept him inside the top five at featherweight. It did not, in Sterling’s view, close the gap to a championship fight.

Sterling then laid out the rest of the picture as he sees it. He pointed to his own Qatar booking and to Losene Keita taking a late spot against Aaron Pico in Abu Dhabi.

“You got Vallejos taking on myself, and then you got Keita stepping in on short, well, I don’t want to say short notice, but stepping in for Abu Dhabi against Aaron Pico, who’s one and one in the UFC,” Sterling said. “There’s no clear-cut contenders right now.”

Pico is 1-1 inside the UFC after a decision win over Patricio Freire. Keita replaced Arnold Allen on the UFC 333 card October 24 in Abu Dhabi. That fight sits on the same show as Alexander Volkanovski defending the featherweight title against undefeated Movsar Evloev. Sterling used that chaos as proof that the division does not have one obvious next challenger.

He still made a case for himself, and he did it without pretending the rankings decide it.

“I think if anyone could have made a case for me, just based on what I’ve done in my resume at 135, OG versus OG in case Volk wins this fight, or even a great rematch with myself and Mozart in a fight that a lot of people thought I won, including myself,” Sterling said.

That is Sterling talking as a former champion who already has the 135-pound résumé. He is 26-5 overall and 3-1 since moving to featherweight, with decisions over Brian Ortega and Youssef Zalal. Vallejos is 18-1 and 4-0 in the UFC after knockouts of Giga Chikadze and Josh Emmett. Sterling is ranked ahead of him. He still framed Qatar as a style-point fight, not a coronation.

“So I got to go out there, get some style points, and I’m going to shock the world, man,” Sterling said. “I’m excited for this.”

The comments matter because they put a veteran name on a messy 145-pound logjam. Silva wants the title talk after a highlight finish of a late replacement. Keita and Pico are about to collide in Abu Dhabi without a clean contender label. Volkanovski still has to get through Evloev before anyone else can force the next championship booking.

Sterling is not waiting on that math. He has Vallejos in Doha on November 21, and he said the way through the noise is the same thing he accused the division of rewarding now.
