Roque Conceição Submits Alexander Chavez and Earns a UFC Contract
Roque Conceição submitted Alexander Chavez with a triangle choke in the first round on Dana White’s Contender Series 95. The tap came at 3:37 on Tuesday at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas, and Dana White awarded Conceição a UFC contract.
The official result was a submission by triangle choke. Conceição attempted two submissions and landed the second. Chavez scored the only takedown, and that shot is what put him in the choke.
Chavez dumped the fight to the mat and held 0:49 of control time. Conceição locked the triangle from the bottom. Chavez tried to slam out of it and came down flat, still in the hold, and the choke finished the scramble.
The striking numbers belonged to Conceição before the grappling decided it. He landed 23 of 42 total strikes and 22 of 41 significant strikes, including 12 of 31 to the head. Chavez connected on 13 of 23 and was cleaner with the leg kicks, 7 of 8 to 5 of 5. Neither man scored a knockdown.
Conceição moved to 12-3. Chavez fell to 9-1.
The finish was the third contract of a card that kept ending early. Salahuddin Everett had already knocked out Ozzy Martin in the co-main. Preston LaGrange later stopped Nell Ariano in the main event. Mateus Soares also got a deal. Alivia Bierley won a decision and did not.
Chavez is a Peruvian who won the takedown and lost the position that came with it. A slam out of a triangle is the exchange that either frees the neck or tightens it. This one tightened it.
No first UFC opponent was named after the hand was raised. Conceição leaves Las Vegas at 12-3 with a contract and a first-round choke on the tape. The takedown belonged to Chavez. The roster spot did not.
