Abdullah Mason Pushes Live for Floyd Schofield Fight After Oscar Interest

Abdullah Mason moved quickly to pursue a lightweight unification fight with Floyd Schofield after the new WBA champion’s win, placing a live call to his manager during a stream and confirming his side is ready to negotiate.

Mason, the WBO lightweight titleholder, was watching fight footage when the conversation turned to comments attributed to Oscar De La Hoya following Schofield’s victory over Lucas Bahdi.

According to the discussion on the stream, De La Hoya indicated a need to consult with his team and promoter, after which the promoter expressed interest in a matchup with Mason. Mason’s side responded by initiating the call in real time to advance the idea.

During the exchange, Mason stated that the fight carries a green light from his camp.

“It’s a green light on our end,” he said. “We ready to get on the business anywhere and any place.” The manager was urged to contact the other side promptly, with Mason noting that his team was waiting on the call to move forward.

The stream also captured Mason’s father commenting that Schofield’s side has previously avoided the matchup and that accepting it now would mark a third instance of ducking the fight.

Schofield captured the vacant WBA lightweight title on October 10 in Chicago with a unanimous decision over Bahdi, scoring on cards of 116-110, 119-108, and 115-111.

The win filled one of the open belts in a division that already features Mason as WBO champion and William Zepeda as WBC champion. Mason, who is 21-0 with 18 knockouts, won his WBO title last November and retained it in July with a 12th-round stoppage of Albert Bell in Cleveland after an original opponent could not secure a visa.

A Schofield-Mason meeting would represent a significant unification bout at 135 pounds, pairing the new WBA champion against the established WBO titleholder.

Mason has previously been linked to larger fights in the division, and Schofield’s promoter has now publicly floated interest through the post-fight comments referenced on the stream. No formal agreement or date has been announced, and the bout remains subject to negotiations between the camps.

The lightweight landscape also includes an ordered WBC defense for Zepeda against interim champion Jadier Herrera, with a purse-bid deadline of October 20 if terms are not reached, and a vacant IBF title ordered between Andy Cruz and Artur Subkhankulov under a similar timeline.

Those obligations continue in parallel with any voluntary unification talks involving Mason and Schofield.

Mason’s live call underscores his interest in moving toward a high-profile unification rather than waiting on the mandatory process. Whether Schofield’s camp engages after the expressed interest will determine if the fight advances beyond the initial outreach. The coming days are expected to clarify whether the sides begin formal negotiations or if the division’s other ordered contests take priority.
